John Thorpe Ellis [el.6.4.2]

John Thorpe Ellis was the second child of Susannah Thorpe & Humphrey Ellis christened July 8th 1835 at Hucknall Torkard, Nottinghamshire.

In 1841 John & his parents were living at Millols Yard, Hucknall Torkard, Notts. He had 2 sisters – Catherine (3) & Elizabeth (2 weeks). His father was a cotton sh… maker.

By 1851 the family had moved to Tibshelf, Notts & John was working as a coal miner at the age of 15. His father & younger sister Catherine were described as cotton frame work knitters. His sister Elizabeth was also still at home & he now had a brother Charles (7), & sisters Sarah Ann (4) & Emma (9 months).

John married Ann Mills (Milns, Milnes).   Ann was born in 1834 at Hucknall Huthwaite, Notts, & christened Ann Mills on June 3rd, 1834 at St Mary Magdalene, Sutton-in Ashfield, the daughter of Martha & Samuel Mills, a coal miner.  Ann’s father was christened Samuel Milns on June 18th, 1803 at Blackwell, the illegitimate son of Hannah Milns, a pauper.  On his marriage in 1827 to Martha Smith at Sutton-in-Ashfield, Derbyshire, Samuel’s surname was given as Mills.  The 1851 & 1871 censuses refer to him as Samuel Mills, but the 1861 census shows him as Milnes.  There is a marriage for John Ellis & Ann Milnes on November 8th, 1857 at St Mary Magdalene, Sutton-in Ashfield which we believe to be the correct marriage for John & Ann.

In 1861 John & Ann were living at New Row, Coppull, Lancs. John was described as a collier in the census & they had 2 children – Sarah Ann (2) & Eliza (8 months) both born in Derbyshire.

By 1865 John & Ann had moved to Clay Cross, Derbyshire where their third child Samuel was born. Ann gave birth to twins, Charles & Martha, in 1868 but sadly both died in infancy.

By 1871 John, a coal miner, & Ann had moved to Tibshelf, Nottinghamshire & were living at the Cottage. They now had a son Samuel (6) as well as the 2 daughters. A 1 year old niece was visiting, Sarah A Nix, born at Tibshelf.

Daughter Sarah Ann married Frederick Dickens in July-September 1875, the marriage being registered at Mansfield.

In 1881 John & Ann were living at Hoyland, Hoyland Nether, Yorks. John was still a coal miner & only son Samuel, also a coal miner, was still at home.

By 1891 John & Ann had returned to Blackwell, Derbyshire & were living at Newton. John was still working as a coal miner & there were no children at home.

John died on August 4th, 1896, aged 61, at Newton, Blackwell & was buried August 8th at Tibshelf, Derbyshire.

By 1901 widowed Ann (66) was boarding with Charlotte & Francis Paskin, a colliery stoker, at Newton Green, Blackwell. Charlotte was the daughter of Emma Ellis [el.6.4.8] & her husband Paul Bingham.

In 1911 Ann was living with her daughter Sarah Ann & husband Frederick Dickens & their family at 155 St Helens St, Elsecar, Barnsley, Yorkshire.  Frederick was a coal miner.

Ann, aged 85, died in 1919 at St Helens St, Elsecar, Barnsley,Yorks & was buried on May 29th at Elsecar.
